As Marseille was preparing to receive 10 million visitors in 2013, its year as European Capital of Culture, accommodation capacity began to expand, but there were no plans for a campsite. Camping Marseille 2013 stepped in to fill the void. The 6,500-sqm site had 180 camping spaces and much more besides. Yes We Camp built and collectively coordinated an event venue open to all that was designed as an eco-village, innovation hub and meeting place with the help of local actors. Located outdoors on the quays of the Estaque river, between the city, cliffs and sea, the campsite offered artists’ workshops, restaurants, unique accommodation, and building and learning activities, as well as a summer programme of cultural and festive events. In all, nearly 500 people worked at the “mini-city”, which was visited by a total of 48,000 artists, tourists, visitors from around the globe, residents of downtown Marseille and the northern neighbourhoods, young backpackers, grandparents and their grandchildren, as well as many others.
